"I just need Jesus, not a church."
- Orthodox answer: Jesus establishes and gathers His Church (; 18:17), and the apostles describe its common teaching, worship, and pastoral leadership (; 14:23). This does not make a personal relationship with Christ unimportant; it locates that relationship within His body.
"The Bible is my only authority."
- Orthodox answer: Scripture is inspired and central. But Paul also commands preservation of oral apostolic teaching (); identifying the canon and understanding ancient texts requires historical testimony and interpretation.
"The Church recognized Scripture; it did not create it."
- Orthodox answer: Agreed. Recognizing an inspired book is not the same as making it inspired. The Orthodox follow-up asks how that recognition is justified, and why the early Church's doctrinal and sacramental testimony should be dismissed without evidence.
"Councils and bishops can make mistakes."
- Orthodox answer: Agreed: particular leaders and councils can err. Orthodoxy claims that the Church's ecumenical reception of apostolic faith, guided by the Holy Spirit, is more than a series of unrelated private opinions. This claim requires historical and theological defense.
"Liturgy, chanting, and incense are extra-biblical."
- Orthodox answer: Paul instructs churches to sing (), pray (), and receive the Eucharist (1 Corinthians 10-11). Some specific Byzantine processions and hymns are later developments. Ancient in principle does not mean every word was dictated by an apostle.
"Icons are idols, and praying to saints rejects Christ."
- Orthodox answer: Orthodoxy worships God alone, distinguishes veneration from adoration, and insists Christ alone is the divine-human mediator (). Whether particular icon and intercessory practices faithfully express the Bible is debated and should be examined rather than assumed.
"You cannot prove Orthodoxy from the Bible alone."
- Orthodox answer: The text does not contain the phrase "Eastern Orthodox Church" or a full modern service rubric. The claim is cumulative: apostolic Scripture, public worship, ordained leadership, conciliar doctrine, and traceable continuity with the ancient Church.
